At a recent holiday gathering, my family and I were sitting around the table reminiscing about the usual family stories and drudging up memories from our childhood. At one point, my youngest sister began to tell of how our mother would not buy her an eighth grade graduation dress. This upset my sister a great deal and she told how she was so upset that she called me in tears because she really needed a dress and wouldn't be able to get one.

I did not recall this story at all, but according to my sister, I took her shopping and helped her choose a dress for the event that I ended up buying for her. She then made a point of saying that I had spent a significant amount of money on the dress.

As my sister recalled this story of our youth, I continued to question her, as I had no memory of this event whatsoever. I didn’t remember the call, the shopping, and certainly buying an expensive dress. But, my sister insisted that the story was true and as she finished the retelling it, she got up, and gave me a big hug!

Up until that day I had no idea that I had such an impact on my little sister’s life. I had done something for one in need without expectation, and didn't think much of it. I looked at my sister and one last time asked, “Are you sure it was ME?” “Yes”, she exclaimed, she was sure, and all I could say was “WOW.” That simple act of kindness left a mark that was unforgettable.
