My daughter and son-in-law came to visit me during one glorious summer three years ago when it was perfect for traveling. I decided that it would be great for them to visit Vancouver, Canada and to hostess them through this marvelous city which is one of my favorites on earth. So, we made hotel reservations, some tentative plans and set off to cross the border and enter our sister country so close to home. When we arived in Vancouver we spent much time on Granville Avenue where the shopping is wonderful, the food delectable and the sights fulfilling. We visited the IMAX theater and
its presentation of Peruvian artifacts and tombs. We enjoyed all that the city had to offer and I was so excited to be able to bring them to Gastown, the older part of the city, and to take them to one of the restaurants that have sprung up in this growing district.
We found parking and entered the street letting our noses lead us to the most perfect establishment. It had been some time
since I had been in Gastown and I was very surprised to see how many "street people" were present and so hungry for even the smallest coin. When I am in these situations, I let my heart tell me what to do and in this case, I did the same. My daughter and son-in-law were a little surprised because they
come from a small town in Nevada where homeless people do not exist.
As we walked past many beggers, one man approached me with his hand stretched out and something within made me feel that this was the man that I was here to help. I took a $20 bill out of my purse and pressed it into his palm. He looked at the denomination of the bill and burst into tears. He wrapped his arms around me and said, "Do you realize what you have done? I have been living at the Salvation Army and attempting to find
work. I just found a job and an apartment and I was exactly $20 short of being able to pay the first month's rent. With your money, tomorrow I can move into my apartment and start my job. You have done this for me."
After the man walked down the street, my daughter said, "What was that about?" I simply replied, "That man allowed me to play 'angel' tonight." I sincerely believe that when we follow our hearts and let kindness be our guide, such miracles are placed before us and these experiences are truly a blessing!
