Our Founder (Dr. Joe Powers)
Who is Dr. Joe Powers? For more than a decade, Joe Powers has been fascinated
with the mind, specifically, how thoughts affect behavior and health.
His research began in his early college days, when he was accepted into
a rigorous honors research program at Temple University. As an undergraduate,
Powers studied the mind-body connection with athletes, and his revolutionary
research found that athletes could actually create brain chemicals to
enhance performance through simple visualization and self-hypnosis techniques.
After his undergraduate study, Powers went on to received
his Masters in Education and Doctoral degrees from Temple University.
While pursuing his graduate education in the field of Exercise and Sport
Psychology, Powers interest in the mind-body connection continued,
as he began to explore this within the addiction community. Working at
such prestigious institutions as The University of Pennsylvania and Johns
Hopkins University, Powers developed various research studies with heroin
and cocaine users, aimed at understanding the role of exercise and holistic
health approaches towards combating their addiction. His work in addiction
research led to a landmark publication in the American Journal on Addictions,
outlining a year-long study which promoted the use of exercise within
addiction rehabilitation. During his graduate schooling, Powers career path
veered in many directions, taking him initially into the medical writing
field, where he published nearly fifty articles, many of which were syndicated
to a variety of health journals and magazines. His work in writing, and
especially his continued editorial towards alternative medicinal approaches,
quickly gained him exposure in the holistic health community, and in 1999,
Powers was hired as Vice President of Content, for WellPlanet, a growing
media company focused on natural health and wellness. Powers thrived in the media world, transitioning eventually from content to business development. After a year at WellPlanet, he moved to New York where he oversaw the business development of a health television company, and where he gained exposure to the many aspects of corporate life.
And then a major shift occurred. Powers desire to better understand the mind-body connection, and more specifically, to help people overcome self-doubt, anxiety, depression, and negative thought patterning, could not be squelched, despite his growing success in the corporate world. In March 2003, Powers left the Corporate world to follow
a lifelong calling to help people unlock their unlimited potential and
open their hearts through kindness and generosity. His vision soon was
cemented in the creation of Soul Graffiti LLC. Pulling together all of
his past experiences in the media, Internet, and business worlds, within
weeks after its website launch, www.soulgraffiti.com, Soul Graffiti became
home to an international audience of thousands of people. Soul Graffitis
mission was simple: to raise an awareness of conscious acts of kindness,
through a supportive and nurturing environment where people could share
stories and learn to overcome adversity with love and compassion for all. After only a month, SoulGraffiti.com registered more than 100,000 hits to its web site and stories began pouring in from around the world. Soul Graffiti began to gain interest with many celebrity authors, psychologists, and spiritualists, who resonated with the powerful message of kindness. Soon these celebrities began to seek participation and Soul Graffiti began to further blossom into a company the espoused love, compassion, and generosity for all.
In 2004, Soul Graffiti along with Powers' Flame Meditation
increased in popularity. Powers meditation classes began to increase
as well and took him to such places as Australia, Canada, Israel, Puerto
Rico, and all around the United States. Besides his workshops, Powers
began a weekly meditation class in Middletown, NJ, where people of all
background come together to practice mindfulness and redirect their thoughts
towards love and kindness.
Due to the success of his first book, Powers hopes to release a revised edition of Soul Graffiti in late 2005 with double the stories and a Foreword by the Dalai Lama. He also looks to publish his first self-help volume, titled The Veil of Consciousness, a book on self-realization and overcoming self-defeating belief systems. Both of these books are currently being reviewed by several interested publishers. |
